Online Scam increasing with Social Media

Released last Friday (7th May 2010), the study says that crimes ranging from viruses, online scams credit card, unsolicited pornography, excessive spam messages, even e-mails "phishing" (bogus messages sent by criminals posing as banks and other retail companies).

Other data show that 72% of people have been victims of some cyber crime, ranging from viruses, online fraud, credit card, unsolicited pornography, receiving excessive spam and phishing emails;

When compared with women, men are more at risk online, and are more often victims of cyber crime.

Symantec has developed a free application to identify malware on Facebook called (D'oh) The Norton Safe Web for Facebook.

The Norton Safe Web for Facebook application scans your news feeds and identifies URLs containing security risks such as phishing sites, malicious downloads, browser exploits and links to unsafe external sites.

With this application, you can launch a scan of your current news feed to see if they contain links that are unsafe for you or your friends to click on.

The scan results help you easily see which links are rated safe and which are risky. To get it, click here.

With so many flaws, I'd say Facebook is (after email) the number one place to target security exploitation. With around 23 percent of users being either unaware of the site’s privacy protection offerings – or choosing to disable the protections is a great place for scammers and phishing schemes.

What’s more, users are engaging in risky behavior online – behavior that could leave them (and possibly the companies they work for) vulnerable to hackers and worse.

A Facebook glitch points up more security problems on the social networking site, while a new survey shows some people (your employees, perhaps?) don't take advantage of basic Facebook privacy controls.
