X|Media|Lab Global Media Ideas Lab: Call for Nominations

Nominations open for digital entrepreneurs to workshop business ideas with the world's most successful digital and entertainment visionaries and investors.

Sydney, May 10 2011 - Entrepreneurs in the digital media and creative industries will be thrilled to learn that X|Media|Lab Global Media Ideas Lab—which features two days of mentorship by the world’s leading digital media and creative thought leaders—is back as part of Vivid Sydney.


Vivid Sydney (27 May-13 June) is the largest light and music festival in the Southern Hemisphere and a major celebration of the creative industries. The festival provides a forum for the creative industries to collaborate, foster business connections and showcase new ideas.

X|Media|Lab: Global Media Ideas offers an incredible opportunity for digital entrepreneurs to receive one-on-one feedback and advice from many of the digital industry’s most influential powerbrokers including Tim Chang, named on the 2011 Forbes Midas List of Top Venture Capitalists; Christopher Tanner, creator of the patented technology now known as Google Earth; and Andy Ellwood from Gowalla.


Applications are now open for digital media, internet, mobile, computer games, commercial media or creative industries entrepreneurs to submit their game-changing idea or project to commercialise or launch into global markets.


Sixteen project teams will be chosen to participate in this exclusive workshop, with the world’s leaders in this space on hand to boost their ideas into reality.


Applicants should nominate a team of 2–6 people with the ability to talk about the creative, technical and commercial aspects of their project or idea. If chosen, the team will be one of 16 that will be able to program one-on-one consultations with the world-leading mentors over one weekend.


Previous Lab projects have included:

  • Purely conceptual propositions
  • Proof of concept
  • Early prototyping (e.g. script, demo model, beta or wire frame level)
  • Cross-platform migration (e.g. TV show to online to mobile)
  • Projects seeking access to new geographical markets (e.g. localising your casual game for the SE Asian market)


Participants will be able to access the knowledge and experience of:


Tim Chang, leading Silicon Valley investor, named on the 2011 Forbes Midas List of Top Venture Capitalists.


Andy Ellwood is the business development director at Gowalla, a mobile social network for life journeys.


Sey Min, a 2011 TED Fellow and a multi-disciplinary interactive designer.


Kei Shimada, the founder and CEO of Infinita, a Tokyo mobile research, consulting and development firm.


Orvar Safström, Scandinavia’s number one game and film commentator and producer of video game music concerts.


Samuel Seow, managing director of Samuel Seow Law Corporation and IP specialist for the entertainment, arts and media industries.


John Tarnoff, formerly of DreamWorks, now the CEO of Newspeak Consulting Group, a media/entertainment industry, digital technology and higher education specialist.


Martyn Ware, a leading figure in electronic music, music production, technology, and creativity.


Eric Zho, Chinese TV pioneer and executive producer of China Idol, the most watched show in the history of television.


Christopher Tanner is the CEO of Emdigo which develops technology that enables anywhere, anytime access to mobile apps, and content and creator of the patented technology now known as Google Earth (San Francisco).

Vivid Sydney will colour the city with creativity and inspiration, featuring the breathtaking immersive lighting of the iconic Sydney Opera House sails, performances from local and international musicians at Vivid LIVE and a free outdoor exhibition of over 40 immersive and interactive light installations.  


In 2011 the festival also includes a range of artistic collaborations, public talks and debates from leading creative thinkers from Australia and around the world, celebrating Sydney as the creative hub of the Asia Pacific.
