Three Strategies for Success in Social Media from iStrategy Melbourne 2011

The global digital iStrategy conference convened in Australia for the first time and took place in Melbourne on the 17-18th May. A number of the sessions included discussions about how to take your brand's social media efforts to the next level with tips for harnessing the power of your social networks and effectively integrating them into your overall communication strategy.

One of the key presentations that I attended was “Secret to Social Media- What do you love?” by Bit Love Founder Mike Prasad. The speaker had informative advice and talked about fostering a culture of experience with mobile and geo-location marketing. He used the work he has done for Kogi, a mobile momentum of Korean BBQ taco trucks as an example of a company that created a culture that drove the brand. Mike’s tips:

Critical Viral Buzz is needed to succeed. Buzz about a brand leads to press and exposure and enables mainstream adoption. To achieve this, target key influencers in your industry as well as local press, creating awareness for your brand and driving results.

Social Media is about people. It is your users that act as marketers for your company dispensing good and bad press about their experience. Social media takes the control once held by the brand and gives it back to the customer.

The circle of Shiny. The Shiny was the buzzword of the event with other speakers referencing it and attendees using it as a hashtag on Twitter. Companies need to ‘create the shiny’- something that excites your user and engages them with a great experience that inspires them to broadcast, export and share.

Some of the most valuable connections came by way of personal connections made during session breaks and by reading and commenting on the #istrategy tweetstream. It was an active and engaging live feed that all the speakers were closely monitoring and responding too. From the conversation happening on the tweetstream, some believed a few sessions should be rebranded as ‘Social Media 101’ while others felt it was lacking in the ‘How To’.

The enthusiasm shown by all attendees at iStrategy reinforces the need for more conferences like these in Australia. It was a well-executed event that showed the organizers that Australian marketers are closing the gap on what their global counterparts know about social media.

I agree completely. Social media is the best viral marketing (and free) tool out there, and there's nothing quite like word of mouth to grow one's business. Great post!

I agree, targeting key influencers is very important to generate buzz and capture a larger audience. Sounds like a successful event! When will you be having a conference in Sydney next?
