With over 25 Billion downloads, is it too late to get your mobile application noticed?

There are more than 555,000 apps in the apple store, with android not far behind at around 450,000, and both platforms are growing faster than any of us can keep up with.Essentially, if you set up a new store on a main street in Sydney, when you open the doors and look around youll find 10 -15 store fronts right next door, selling exactly the same stuff as you. Unless you have something really compelling or a solid mobile marketing strategy youre probably going to be closing the doors before I finish writing this article.

the app highstreet digitalministry.com All too often I see great ideas for great apps with fabulous creative that can’t fail…. All too often it hits the app stores and does just that....fail.  The reason is quite simple; many brands take the “build it and they will come” approach.

There are a number of things you can do to ensure your application gets the recognition it deserves and justifies the spend.

1)     Build for the people

Build a good application – Think about the consumer first, their mobile habits, the user experience and how they want to interact with you on the move.

2)     Share it with people that already care

Send it to your database via email, sms and through social networks: I know this seems very basic but it’s amazing how many companies miss this, if you have an existing audience use them and encourage them to share it with their friends.

3)     Be found

Google recently made improvements to the way in which it indexes app store description pages.  Choose your app name very carefully: The name of the application should align with the name of the brand as this is how Google will find it.

When building links to your apps use text not graphics – google cannot read text that is part of a graphic.

Point your home page and category pages at your app profile.

If you do not consider your apps important enough to link to your home page then Google won’t either.

4)     Make it easy to download

Link your mobile site to your application:  give people that hit your mobile site (and I am really hoping you have one and not just a great app idea) links to access the application. Make it easy for them to download.

5)     PR, PR, PR and More PR

If you want to launch a really successful app then you could take your great idea, build it and hope it goes crazy OR you could plan for it and ensure that the process for engagement is thought through before you sign off the build.  I’d suggest 75% of application development today takes the first approach.
