SixthSense Technology- The vision and the reality

I was prompted by an article in Tech Crunch regarding how TED had revealed its Top 20 Most-Watched Talks. Two Sixth Sense technology videos occupied the third and fifth spots with 9.2 MIllion and 7.5Million views respectively. It was in fact 2009's Invention of the Year and the most exciting part, it was going to be open source. So what happened, why are we still waiting?

SixSense Vision and realitySixthsense in case you missed it was meant to pave the way for profound interaction with our environment. Imagine "Minority Report" and then some. Pranav Mistry the genius behind the whole thing features in both of the TED videos with the bottom video showing how he developed and evolved the idea. However the entire idea seems to have stalled as I cant find any updated videos and Pranav Mistry site shows these TED videos as the latest. So has SixtSense technology just got stuck between vision and reality or is it due an imminent explosive entry onto the mass consumer market?

In February 2011, Macleans journalist, Jesse Brown, called up Mistry to ask that question direct: “Dude, what’s taking so long?” Mistry’s reply: “Things take time.” So will this mean that an Apple or a Google will step in and take up the technology or are we set for a long wait?

Looking again at the videos and the portable technology that is needed, I am sure Google Glasses and Sergey Brin have some sort of SixSense technology in mind. If so it seems that Mistry will be happy as he stated in 2011 “I’m not interested in making money from this. SixthSense is not a product, it’s a vision. There will not be one SixthSense device. If Steve Jobs comes out with a SixthSense product tomorrow, that would be a good day for me.” So making money from SixthSense does not seem to have been Mistry’s reason for developing. Good on him, it’s a vision not a product, and hopefully it’s a vision soon to be realised for him.

Anyway, those two Viodeos are still worth a look,
