Melbourne Facebook Developer Garage II Summary

Hard core coding took back seat at the latest Facebook Developer Garage held in Melbourne.

The second event of its kind kicked off with a digital agency MD, a branded content specialist and a leading Australian application developer. Their respective presentations included an introductory Facebook strategy for marketers, an overview of branding activity and branding opportunities for developers and key Facebook application development insights from a seasoned practitioner.

Making a bold presentation on the concept ‘Facebook Strategy’, KK Santhanam from the Melbourne digital agency Additude, in his own calm way stressed the importance of understanding the user demographic and their motivation and patterns of Facebook use. He claimed that this knowledge was a key starting point for those aspiring to develop successful applications that ‘Facebookers’ would use. In many respects KK’s presentation was tailored towards addressing the interests and requirements of marketeers and brand managers who were assessing Facebook.

The second speaker, James Grant Hay from In Shot, an Australian product placement and branded entertainment agency, gave a wider ranging presentation. James touched on many though provoking points concerning branding. In part, he provided the audience with a greater ‘branding context’ by surveying a number of current branding activities that included not just reference to Facebook, but also reference to activities innovatively supported by brands taking place across a range of media. This was done chiefly to illustrate a new willingness from leading brands to embrace new media. Importantly, James gave an indication of what brands expect when they invest in new areas and delivered an overall optimistic view of some of the opportunities that are emerging for facebook application developers. This was certainly a presentation that set out to address the more confident or established application developers who had perhaps already deemed themselves ready and prepared to work with brands.

Returning to the Facebook Garage for a second time was Facebook application developer Toby Hede, the founder of FiniteStateMachine. Clearly distinguishing his presentation from KK and James, Toby ensured the Garage agenda was steered back towards offering the assembled developers some valuable food for thought concerning application development. With his own unique self-mocking style, black dress sense and sharp technical mind, Toby launched into his own ‘riff style’ presentation on the Facebook API, application testing, SSH tunnels, test accounts, multiple versions of applications, Selenium (testing tool), Prefabrikator (Toby’s own Facebook application application creating software), profile updates, using handles, scalability issues and much more...
