Harnessing the power of Twitter for good

The use of Twitter by organisations in the commercial sector to rapidly snowball content and engage with individuals is widely known. What's less known are some the fantastic ways Twitter has been used to raise awareness of charitable causes and rally support for social change.

Twitter is like a modern Roman forum-a place to meet, interact and spread ideas.  Hashtags like #social good, #cause, #volunteer, and #4change allow Twitter users to "tag" their ideas and find like-minded users. The truth is, people like good ideas-and they like doing good. The marriage of social media and social causes generates word of mouth support-the Holy Grail for any communications campaign.

And if you're looking for examples of how this has been done, you don't have to look too hard...

TweetsGiving, a project of non-for-profit Epic Change, set a goal in 2008 to raise $10,000 to build a classroom for a school in Tanzania.  The event spread virally to connect those interested in donating.  TweetsGiving met their goal in six days.  Similarly, Twitter fundraising drive Twestival asks users to organise, plan, and host volunteer-powered local gatherings with 100% of funds going to charities.  Since its 2009 launch, over 200 cities have participated, raising $1.2 million for social causes.

During the recent Queensland floods, police noted the rapidly trending Twitter hashtag #qldfloods, and took advantage of the trend by broadcasting their own updates. As the floods played out, Twitter became integral in communicating road closures and flood warnings. Additionally, major non-for-profits like the Salvation Army, World Vision, RSPCA, and many others used the medium to appeal to followers for donations to flood relief.

In 2009, following Victoria's devastating bushfires, social media allowed community members in Flowerdale to organize a relief fund (http://helpflowerdalenow.blogspot.com/).  Peter Williams (@rexster), CEO of Deloitte Digital, helped implement the social media strategy-resulting in $1.5 million in donations, temporary housing, and the ability for the community to liaise with government and media throughout the rebuilding process.

With results like these and the cost effectiveness that Twitter offers expect social media to play an even more important role in bringing about social change in the months ahead.

Facebook still doesn't have the metrics to prove profitability and prove growth and awareness from their platform, not a surprise! Thanks for sharing...
