An often, overlooked web audience: the silver surfers

While a lot of internet marketing companies and major social networking sites focus on the 18 to 34-year-old market, most tend to overlook a growing and ever expanding and often uncatered for web audience - the silver surfers.

The over 50s in the UK are a web audience that now number in the millions.

In fact as our population gets older, so does our web audience and a lot of these users are being left unaccounted for. While a strong pro-youth marketing initiative is usually mildly successful at best, many online outlets are now looking at a wider, expanding means to envelope entire age groups.

The highly applauded Dark Knight viral marketing campaign demonstrated last year how successful the digital word-of-mouth can be when it comes to garnering interest from users of all ages. Teens to the over 80s showed up to see Batman take down the Joker.

But what kind of content do we create for the silver surfer, the over 50 audience? Ideas anyone? (Please feel free to comment) Is the web user-friendly enough for the older generation? Are we as an industry guilty of neglect?

A simple news site would cater for most peoples' free time or even a social networking site like Saga Zone. While everyone's internet tastes are different, there definitely seems to be a gap in the market here.
