SOCIAL MEDIA  Working in PR gives one a unique and often insightful view of the impact social media can have as a method to connect with the differing facets of a brand's social communites. These communities comprise of not only the consumer target market and potential fan base, but also the media and the internal stakeholders/employees. However, confusion over how and when to target these different groups too often spells death to many a social media campaign. Read on

SOCIAL MEDIA  Recently, I stumbled upon a few online articles about cyber bullying. Obviously most of us think that bullying in any form is a completely unacceptable way of behaving and one which would definitely get you a timeout in the school playground. However all too often cyber bullying goes unaddressed and unrecognized in the sometimes anonymous world of social media especially among industry peers. And it made me wonder when does strong social heckling and blog commentating cross the line into cyber bullying and pure, all out defamation? Read on

SOCIAL MEDIA  As a social media marketer and digital PR specialist, I find it all too easy to get lost amidst the infinite conversations between my industry peers about the subject of social media etc. It sometimes feels as though I've lost sight of the forest for the trees - a bit like working for a newspaper dedicated to writing articles about working at a newspaper. Geditt? Anyway, time for a little experiment to get me back on track. Read on

The Australian has predicted that social networking site Twitter will fail despite the current buzz around it. Read on

Seans reaction: This is exactly the kind of bosh that demonstrates newspaper's desperate lack of understanding about social media. To say that Twitter doesn't create communities is ridiculous. No one brand creates a community anyway, they simple facilitate them. And Twitter is amazing at facilitating discussions across large communities of people.

  • I joined Mark Communications as the Integrated Communications Director (now head of Digital) responsible for new business growth and strategic direction of Mark's social media/PR arm.

I have developed a suite of innovative social media and consumer engagement products which are redefining the PR category including a world first community outreach for NRMA's travel social network and Choice Magazine's first ever social media and online PR campaign by whom Mark is now the retained social media comms agency.

I have over eight years experience in digital marketing both in Australia and the UK where I worked for The Daily Telegraph in their digital marketing team implementing new content initiatives leveraging mobile, online and emerging technologies including the development and launch of the first major news mobile WAP site in the UK.

For the past four years I has been dedicated to developing strategies and plans to facilitate major consumer brands enter the social media sphere.

Brands I have worked with include Coca-Cola, Vitamin water, Mother Energy drink, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, Lion Nathan, POM wonderful, Westpac, Optus, Unilever, Macquarie Bank, Bigpond, The Commonwealth games, Westpac, Fox Home Entertainment, Nestle and Fonterra.

I have also been involved in the development of corporate communication plans in relation to social media and have helped brands such as Optus devise internal and external processes.

My team's work in the digital PR field was cited as the most significant factor when awarded the B&T PR agency of the year award in 2008.

I have written many articles and commentary on social media and digital PR for B&T, Adnews, digital ministry and NETT magazine and have spoken at social media training seminars for the PR industry including presenting to a forum of Government officials and staff on innovation and the changing face of PR earlier this year in Canberra.
